Out of the intense desire of the public of this locality for the spread of higher education in this backward tribal sub-plan area and in response to heavy public demand such educationalist and futurist evinced keen interest in starting a college at Kundra.

         The college established on 13th may 1993 inaugurated by Honorable Chief Minister Biju Patnaik and college was named as Biju Patnaik College. It started with only two class room in Sri Aurobindo Siksha Niketan ( High School) Campus, It had a modest beginning with Intermediate Arts with only fourteen  students on the roll. 

        Later College was shifted to its own building at College Square in 2000. In 2000 – 01 the Three year Degree Courses was started and Three year Degree with Honours was started in 2014. Also in the same year the   Intermediate Science Courses Started.

          By the Govt. circular, the college has been separated from +2 (Intermediate) wing. Today the +2 (Intermediate) wing known as Biju Patnaik Higher Secondary School and the college renamed as Biju Patnaik Degree College.

         The college is affiliated to Berhampur University and Managed by the Higher Education Department, Govt. of Odisha. The college is under process of 2(f) and 12(b) / NAAC of the U.G.C. Act.
